Introducing Percussion Instruments to Young Learners

Introducing percussion instruments to young students is about so much more than making music! It's an opportunity to build foundational musical skills while encouraging creativity, independence, responsibility, and a love of learning.

In my article and accompanying presentation, “Instruments for the Young Student (PreK–2nd Grade),” I share practical strategies for successfully incorporating percussion instruments into the elementary music classroom.

From beginning with simple bean bag activities to introducing egg shakers, rhythm sticks, tambourines, and pitched percussion, I explore how a thoughtful progression helps young musicians develop steady-beat skills, coordination, listening skills, and confidence. I also share some of my favorite classroom activities, songs, and children's literature that make learning through percussion both meaningful and fun.

One of the most important lessons I've learned is that successful music-making begins with establishing routines, clear expectations, and opportunities for students to experience success. When we take the time to build these foundations, we're doing much more than teaching children to play instruments—we're preparing them to become thoughtful, responsible, and confident musicians.

Whether you're a new elementary music teacher or a seasoned educator looking for fresh ideas, I hope these resources provide practical inspiration that you can take directly into your classroom.

Because sometimes the simplest instruments create the biggest opportunities for learning!
